    Стаття є витягом із четвертого розділу навчального посібника "Становлення та розвиток органів поліції (міліції) иа території України (XVІІІ ст. - 2023 р.): хроніка основних подій", який готує колектив відділу НІРВД ДНДІ МВС України. У дослідженні висвітлюється хроніка основних подій становлення правоохоронних органів України від проголошення незалежності держави до Революції Гідності (24 серпня 1991 р. - лютий 2014 р.).This article highlights the main events in the formation of law enforcement agencies of Ukraine, from the proclamation of independence to the Revolution of Dignity (August 24, 1991 - February 2014). In particular, the authors note that the extraordinary session of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR of the twentieth convocation adopted the Act on the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine and resolutions on the political situation in Ukraine and the immediate actions of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to create conditions for not a further military coup; on departition of state bodies, institutions and organizations; on military formations in Ukraine; the Law of the Ukrainian SSR on granting additional powers to the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. Since that time, new stage in the life of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine begins - as a department of a sovereign state.
